I crossed my fingers and ignored these errors. Unfortunately, my PC hangs when I try to run either mesetup.exe or megaem.exe. I have tried deleting my old megaem.cfg and 512.bnk. The flange effect originated in old tape players, where you had to fuddle somewhere and make the speed sound wrong. Hard to explain, it's used a lot in Pearl Jam's "Oceans" (from Ten). 2. Reverb plays back sound from a very short inverval behind at a lower volume , giving the impression of a room or a cave. Echos usually use a larger interval, I guess. It's used nearly anywhere, just try talking in a hall. 3. Whoops! Don't mix my service and my hobbies. Ask somebody else. MIDI control in DOS - you mean ultrinit -lo. That enables line-in. If you have a newer GUS try fiddling with ultramix as well. as for MIDIFier - it's a great app for jam sessions, and basically turns your GUS into a MIDI module. Yes, it lets you hook a keyboard up. Distortion guitars? Check out Eliseum's (sp?!) newest upload to EPAS, e_e-gtrs.zip. You'll have what you want. Using custom patches in Windows? Check out the BankManager feature of Patch Manager (it's up there on the menu). Have fun! VoiceAssist uses some Sound System drivers, I think. Something custom. Anyway the program's too dumb - you bang your desk by mistake and it quits the app and stuff like that. The new dimension in gaming, or Focal Point 3D, has gone with a rather loud bang, as Focal Point sued (yes, sued) Gravis for breach of contract or dunno. Anyway, no more 3D, unless you're using HMI drivers. The ACE can do anything a GUS can do, since the GF1 is on-board, EXCEPT use recording, CD, or line in. It's just the synth, ma'am. Anyway, it interpolates like a wonder, and runs 2ndreal fine. BTW, try "dope" (clx_dope) for an amazing 3D demo. MIDI player for linux? Adagio. That's all I know, sorry. About the Doom 3D sound features - they're still there. What Doom 1.2 used was the ability of the GF1 to pan an effect (or sample) to any of 18 pan positions. So, instead of 3 places for the growls to come from you suddenly had 18. Neat. FP3D used 6 different samples (one for each 3D direction) and gave you real up down back front sound, not just 180 degree panoramic. (bye Ig!) GUS trackers? There are two I'd recommend - ScreamTracker 3.21 and FastTracker II. ST3 makes the common .S3M files. Look for it at mpoli.fi or EPAS. Yossi. lioren1@weizmann.weizmann.ac.il / Visit . Go to an Ultrasound ftp site, and look around for a file called ft203.zip. This is Fast Tracker 2, the best tracker on the planet, which has a relatively easy to use mouse-keyboard interface, and oodles of features. You can record and edit your own samples using it, or steal samples from other people's songs, or load samples in most formats, or load GUS .pat instruments even, so this should get you raw material. This will overdrive it badly and cause serious distortion, if not actual circuit damage. If you are using the line-out instead of amplified-out, then try reducint the mixer volume for WAV output. Next, you should be using a 16-bit DMA channel, not an 8-bit one. You are currently using channel 1 (the second and third numbers in the ULTRASND variable) which is only 8-bit. Try channel 5, 6 or 7. This may not fix the WAV problem but it may fix other stuff. Harry <:-{} hpulley@uoguelph.ca | This message released to the PUBLIC DOMAIN \ Harry C. Good day Gussers. . . I'm looking for serious buyers for my NEC 3XI bundle which includes 15 caddies (around $7-$8 a piece mail order), OS/2 WARP on cd (around $65-$70 mail order), and as a bonus X-WING, Imperial Pursuit, and B-WING on 3.5" disks (around $30, $15, and $15 mail order, respectively). The price drop for the NEC 3XI bundle is: $225 -- I'll pay 2nd Day UPS with ground tracking, insurance, and packaging. Price is good for the continental 48 states. OR $200 -- The prospective buyer pays for shipping ground tracking; I'll pay for packaging. The NEC 3XI has served me well for 10 months (2 year parts and labor warranty). It also works well with my Adaptec 6360 SCSI controller, GUS MAX rev. 1.7 with 1Mb ram, DOS 6.22, WIN for WGPS 3.11; under OS/2 WARP and WIN '95 Final Beta Release, both auto-detect the NEC 3XI just fine when connected to a supported SCSI controller i. e. Adaptec. Again, I'm looking for serious buyers, please, and I would like to help out a fellow Gusser. I'll be happy to set up a 30 day trial period and refund provided that the hardware and software are shipped in the same condition as I would have shipped them, along with ground tracking. All hardware and software are in excellent condition and contain all original packaging and documentation (minus the caddies' packaging). Overseas interested buyers, I can work out an arrangement since the $225 quote is for shipping within the continental 48 states. Don't use General MIDI as your music device. Instead, copy the ultra.mid file over the SoundBlaster 16's MIDI device (can't remeber the filename...). Also, you might want to try the new AIL 3.0s from archive.epas.utoronto.ca. Don't know if it will make a big difference, but it's worth a try. The filename is called: usail311.zip BTW: In the next few days, I will upload an optimized patch for System Shock CD (as soon as I get through my finals...). Look out for it in archive.epas.utoronto.ca. Hope this helps, and keep on GUSsing. Olivier ------------------------------ From: bbaskin@mail.utexas.edu (Bryan K. Baskin) Date: Thu, 01 Jun 95 23:23:17 EDT Subject: ACE, Win95/NT, other stuff... Hey Y'all, About ACE: Friend of mine got one, it seems everything that doesn't need the recording part of the GUS should work fine. So mod players, games etc. work as if with a gus. Linux seems to compile with it too. It uses the same 256kb x 16bit chips as the other new GUS's and comes with 1/2 MB. Don't forget to disable the joystick with ultrinit -dj.. About Win95/NT and GUS: I'm not surprised it works for some people and not with others considering the staggering numbers of different versions of Gravis' Windows driver and the various Win95 betas. The preview was build 347, i've used 445, and i've heard of 468 a while ago. Anyone know what the current build level is? (type "ver" at a prompt). Until proper support, night the GUS work better in DOS sessions WITHOUT the windows driver? Seems that DOS support would be a higher prioroty to GUI support for many people. Also, to the guy writing the NT driver: You've got balls man. Good luck. I don't use it now, but i might in the future if the interface comes out of the stone age before i die... Oh, and to anyone who hopes this man's driver will work with Win95... it probably won't. Different driver scheme and underlying assumptions. NT=stability, Win95=compatability. Also, what games do not work under Win95? I've seen some work with a SB16, but much of the digital sound was screwed up on some games... like One Must Fall. The music was all wacked out (its mod-type music). Does it sound right with a GUS? I'm just wondering if some problems are also timing related and this affects different hardware differently.
